2019 Staff Favorites from Chevalier's!
ULTIMATE RECOMMENDATIONS FROM A BUNCH OF BOOK NERDS
All tallied up, we're pretty sure our staff has read over a hundred books total this year. And of those many, many books we present to you our favorite reads of the year. (Keep in mind not all of them were published in 2019, but they did happen to fall into our laps this year.)

WHERE REASONS END by YIYUN LI
Yiyun Li is one of my favorite authors of all time and this novel, inspired by Li's own life, is my favorite book of 2019—and I've read A LOT of books. Possibly the saddest, most moving book ever. If you have a teenage son, don't read it.
THE BATMAN WHO LAUGHS
by SCOTT SNYDER & JOCK
This book reminded me of why I love superhero comics. Featuring a toxin that turns people into the Joker and "dark metal" with dimension-hopping properties. It is 100% delicious comic book nonsense.
by SHINSUKE YOSHITAKE
The turbulent tale of a young boy who tries to take off his shirt. And gets stuck. Will he have to live like this forever?! This book makes me smile every time.
by PATRICK RADDEN KEEFE
A truly incredible book about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Keefe explores all sides of the conflict, from the disappearance of civilian Jean McConville to the life of Dolours Price, a charismatic IRA member who later has a change of heart. A true crime/history book with the page turning power of a spy novel.
HOWARD STERN COMES AGAIN
by HOWARD STERN
A beautifully designed collection of Stern's most engaging interviews—with extensive commentary by the radio host on the evolution of his career. The chapter about Donald Trump will positively bend your mind.
THE POET X
by ELIZABETH ACEVEDO
Through poetry, Xiomara navigates her complicated relationship with her devout Catholic mother, the new boy in her biology class, and the struggles of womanhood. The Poet X is the definition of a page turner.
by CLARICE LISPECTOR
To read Clarice Lispector is to be put under a powerful hypnotic spell. Feverish, mad and genius, these descriptions pale in comparison once you immerse yourself in her stories.
CALLING DOWN THE HAWK
by MAGGIE STIEFVATER
In this contemporary fantasy series-starter, a boy who can pull objects from his dreams hurtles unknowingly toward the apocalypse. Stiefvater will have you falling for her complex characters and magic so real you swear you could touch it.
