10 books that made us—and will make you—sob uncontrollably

Sometimes life makes us cry.

Then sometimes books make us cry...

...because they’re tragic or hilarious, often times both. It’s because these books do such a good job of describing or probing our reality (like Bob Woodward’s FEAR ahh) that they hold such a dear place in our hearts.

As Kafka says:

“I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound or stab us. If the book we're reading doesn't wake us up with a blow to the head, what are we reading for?”

1. The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann

“The main character (Hans Castorp) was my best friend. I cried. Yes I did. Nothing really happens in the book but I got very close to Hans and my heart felt strange and difficult things for my best friend.”

-Lizzy

2. Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

“These people are so good and they’re doing the best that they can and yet life keeps throwing them shit sandwich after shit sandwich.”

-Martha

-Theresa
