12 Great Books to Keep You Pining for Summer Vacation

We at Chevalier’s hope that right now you’re reading and eating ice cream under a giant umbrella, poolside.

But even if you’re not on vacation (like us) we hope you’re still reading and eating ice cream anyway (also like us).

Here are twelve books with the oh-so-beautiful-to-my-ears words: SUMMER and VACATION in their titles...and they are actually good too. Did we mention that??!!

1. This One SUmmer

by jillian and Mariko Tamaki

To me, this is the number one book with the word summer in the title. A very tender graphic novel about blooming into young adulthood during summer vacation. The illustrations are incredible and will take you right into the ocean. DO not miss.

2. Summerland

by Michael Chabon

Summerland is an awesome novel for both middle readers and adults. It takes place on the mysterious Clam Island, where the protagonists play baseball and meet mythological figures in this joyful summer romp.

3. Summer

by Edith Wharton

One librarian’s trials and tribulations with family and romance, a tale both tragic and intriguing. No one like Wharton observes quite so compellingly what it was like to be a woman at the turn of the century.

4. 10:30 on a Summer Night

by Marguerite Duras

One of Duras’s four short novels published in 1960, 10:30 On a Summer Night, like all of her short novels, is a beautiful and poetic exploration of relationships and all the trouble they entail.

5. Summer

by Karl Ove Knausgaard

The fourth book in Knausgaard’s Seasons Quartet isn’t technically out yet but we’re sure it’s good. The Seasons Quartet is different from the My Struggle series but just as awesome. Part memoir, part WWII fiction, it’s totally Knausgaardian while offering something unexpected and new.

(And here is a picture of Knausgaard looking like the King of the North.)

6. My First Summer in the Sierra

by John Muir

If you are a nature lover and have never read John Muir, you are in for such a treat. Muir was devoted to the Sierra and fought his whole life to protect it. What a gorgeous adventure in the mountains.

7. The SUmmer Book

by Tove Jansson

You might know Jansson from her beloved children’s series, Moominland, but Finnish author Tove Jansson is also known for a long autobiographical series of novels that include this beautiful book, The Summer Book, about six year old Sophia who spends the summer with her grandmother on an island in the gulf of Finland.

8. Love and Summer

by William Trevor

A fantastic Irish novelist, Trevor won the Whitbread Prize for this novel and was nominated for the Man Booker. This story centers on forbidden love in an Irish town in the 1950s. Expect a mix of Chekhov and Joyce.

9. The Vacationers

by Emma Straub

Emma Straub is not only on a mission to promote and save indie bookstores in Brooklyn, New York but she is also a fantastic novelist. The Vacationers should not be forgotten as one of the great contemporary beach reads we’ve got. Witty, and sharp, Straub explores the life of a family during their vacation to Mallorca.

10. vacationland

by John hodgman

John Hodgman makes the mundane laugh-out-loud funny in this series of essays. With his signature (and endearing) blandness, Hodgman takes us through his misadventures in the Northeast. Never before has taking out the garbage, planting rat poison and building cairns been dissected with so much mirth and mayhem.

11. Marriage Vacation

by Pauline Turner Brooks

You may recognize this book from the hit TV series, Younger. Marriage Vacation actually has a starring role in a few of the episodes when the alleged author, Pauline Turner Brooks, dishes about her ex-husband, the main character, Charles. Marriage Vacation is now a beach read with a cult-following.

12. Vacation Guide to the sOlar System

by Olivia Kosiki & Jana Grcevich

Any Neil De Grasse Tyson fan will love this trip to the stars. With incredible illustrations, you can read this book as though you’re actually planning a vacation to the solar system. It’ll engage your curiosity and imagination in a totally refreshing way.
