The Mars Room

in conversation with Mitch Kamin

Rachel Kushner will be joining us at Chevalier's Books with her recently released novel, The Mars Room. Following Romy Hall, a courageous, pitiless heroine, who's struggling to overcome unblessed origins and survive through her time in Stanville Women's Correctional Facility, The Mars Room is persuasive and heartbreaking - a serious reckoning with incarceration, inequality, contemporary doom, and what it means to be free.

Rachel Kushner is also the author of The Flamethrowers, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and a New York Times Top Five Novel of 2013. Her debut novel, Telex from Cuba, was a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award and a New York Times bestseller and Notable Book.  She is the recipient of a 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship and the 2016 Harold D. Vursell Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Rachel Kushner will be in conversation with Mitch Kamin, an attorney and Co-Chair of the Commercial Litigation Practice Group at Covington & Burling LLP and, from 2003-2010 President/CEO of Bet Tzedek Legal Services, one of the leading non-profit legal organizations in the United States.  Mitch serves on the on the Board of Commissioners for the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.
